FALCAO AND MONASHEE

FALCAO AND MONASHEE have been called “alternately terrifying and soothing”.

With their new album “FOOLS”, the “indisputably original post-Gregorian art-goth” pair are set to haunt.

Following last June’s eponymous debut (“rooted in psych-folk but looking dreamily forward -Exclaim!), these 14 new tracks were recorded
live-off-the-floor, with simultaneous vocals and instrumentals performed to pre-recorded loops and samples. Captured over the course of 3 days in December 2009 by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer, Sleepy Sun) at the Hive studios, using zero overdubbing; “Fools” has been a work in progress since early 2008, when F and M began composing together in the pacific wilderness on Galiano Island.

As with their first album, these songs got their start in the wild, but the loops and words have been further shaped by time in the city, with the duo spending this past fall experimenting in Vancouver; (some lyrics date back to the island, while one song was finished in-studio).

Continuing the same bass, keys, harp, banjo, violin, mandolin, and drums from their debut, and introducing a Freq Box (“Inner Journey”,
“Futurey Gamey”), Kootenay Mountain Dulcimer (“Investigative”), and looped accordion (“Kathmandu”); Falcao and Monashee additionally
sample old sleigh bells (“Merry Go Round”), tibetan cymbals (“Casbah”), bell plates (“Fighting Challenge”), a gong (“Valentine”), and a few more instruments (mostly recorded Halloween 2009 at a farm in the Mountains of British Columbia), plus a couple of clips taken from Youtube (Tibetan Longhorns from the Himalayas, and a speech by
Queen Elizabeth II of England) and some city birds (“Hollywood Cigarettes…”). Vintage plate reverb on the dual vocals lends to the dark, swirling atmosphere of the songs.

In time for April, “Fools” is now available for free download/by donation and streaming, and will be available soon on itunes, with pre-orders now available for Limited self-release on 12″ VINYL. Falcao and Monashee are currently booking shows in Vancouver and making tour plans.
