Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers
The Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers on a Western Tour in Canada.
I saw the Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers at the Astoria. They are from Winnipeg but were touring in BC and Alberta. My feet felt like dancing, but the modest “crowd” of two people on the dance floor made me shy so I just disappeared among the numerous fans that only moved their fingers, toes and the brave ones even their head to the rhythm. Next time I expect you all to be out there. The music of the Flying Fox will make you wanna dance. Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers have steadily worked their way into the Winnipeg music scene since 2005. At the helm of Flying Fox is Jesse Krause, whose enchanting song writing, vocals and guitar work lead the musical way. The rhythm section is comprised of drummer Bucky Driedger (The Liptonians), keyboardist Darren Grunau (The Liptonians) and bassist Lindsey Collins. Paul Schmidt and Steve T. Kay complete the sound with trombone and trumpet, respectively. Complex songwriting and “Winnipeg’s strongest horn section” (The Manitoban) give Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers a stylistic diversity that appeals to indie popsters, big-band lovers and folksters alike.
Although their musical niche is difficult to describe, these six classically trained musicians draw from jazz, folk, rock, and funk, while maintaining pop sensibilities. Musical references have been made to Calexico, Hawksley Workman, Weather Report and Beirut in an attempt to define Flying Fox’s eclectic sound. Their diverse repertoire ranges from sing-along pop songs to adventurous theatrical compositions. This breadth of material makes them appealing to both the sophisticated musician and less scrutinizing dancer in the crowd.
Now one of Winnipeg’s “most acclaimed bands,” (The Winnipeg Sun) their resume includes playing the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, The Komasket Music Festival (Vernon, BC), The Arts Wells Festival (Wells, BC), the Great Woods Music Festival (Beausejour, MB) and a showcase at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards. Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherer’s self-titled EP was released in August 2008 and received popular attention from local campus media earning five stars from University of Winnipeg’s The Uniter. Expect a full length in 2010.
