THE SCALE-BREAKERS AKA: Subway & Guy Woods

When you step on a scale, what do you see?…A number higher than the one you had in your mind?…Well that’s not the case for Stephen “Subway” McGruther and Guy Woods, when these 2 hip-hop heavyweights jump on, the scale reads “to the top”, a destination at which these hungry artists, no pun intended, are sure to arrive. Since early 2006, when the chance came to finally link up in Victoria B.C. instead of cyberspace, the towering two-some have taken Canada by storm. This has culminated into their first major single video “Free” being played in rotation on MuchMusic’s RapCity, Canada’s most revered Hip-Hop outpost, along with the MuchVibe program, as well as the channel. Between Subway’s soaring vocal range and Guy Woods’ molasses-smooth delivery, the two larger-than -life emcees have come together to bring a whole new look to the game, being dubbed the new jazz in the process.

The date was February 29th 2008, the setting was picturesque Courtney B.C., and an opening spot on a Mini-Tour for Canadian Hip-Hop Icon Choclair was on their plate. This not an uncommon setting, all was as it should have been, except no longer were Subway and Guy Woods the preliminary act, they were now The Scale Breakers, a moniker offered from fellow S.B. Family member Cody The Catch. The Scale Breakers later went on to tour with Canadian Hip-Hop Pioneer Maestro, appearing on nearly 20 dates with the Toronto native on his 20th Anniversary Tour, a contact that would in turn connect them with future manager Big Sleeps. The next year was spent doing shows with some of the industry’s largest personalities including Sean Kingston, GZA, The Beatnuts, Gift of Gab of Blackalicious, Lateef of Latyryx, D12, Joe Budden & Royce Da 5’9′ of The Slaughterhouse, Big B (Hart & Huntington), Chino XL, Swollen Members, Roc Raida (R.I.P), Clipse, Bliss n Eso (Australia), Hilltop Hoods (Australia), Sweatshop Union, Red 1 and Mini-Tours with Moka Only & DL Incognito. As their hard-hitting set took over stage after stage, the 2 big men quickly earned a well deserved reputation for their unique, high-energy show.

The destructive duo has stayed on the grind putting new music out almost weekly, with highly anticipated features with artists and producers such as Rob The Viking, LoKeyNote, Classified, Spesh K, OzzieChan (Vancity), Bocko, Kool Ace Ha (L.A.), Chad Hatcher, Audioholic(Germany) and Stu Ray just around the corner. Already having over 100,000 combined mySpace views, and receiving over 35,000 YouTube hits worldwide, The Scale Breakers have 2 more videos getting ready to debut on MuchMusic, “Small Town Talent”, an ode to Sub’s small town roots produced by Moka Only and Konfidential’s “Get ‘Em” featuring The Scale Breakers, Snak The Ripper and Evil Ebenezer, a track produced by Stu Ray. Add to that their recent signing to Indie Label “New-Jazz Records Inc.”, owned and operated by longtime friend John “Junebug” Hubbard, and the future indeed looks bright for a couple of big boys making big boy moves. We are the new Jazz!!…”SB”
