Even before I had heard their first single, Weapon, I’ve been intrigued a wee smidge by the enigma that is Rococode. Formed just over a year ago and not having released any albums—let alone songs—this 4-piece from Vancouver have been a buzz band all over the BC indie music scene. It may possibly be due to the fact that the band is fronted by Laura Smith and Andrew Braun, both having their own music history in solo projects and collaborations with other local artists. It may also be partially due to their tight rhythm section of Johnny Andrews and Shaun Huberts, both having played for acts such as Tegan & Sara and Shaun playing bass for Starfield.

Ever since I first heard “Drinking Games” as a free download on iTunes some 17 months ago, I knew there was something different yet fascinating about Library Voices. From the wonderful vocal harmony arrangements, to the subtle and truly odd noises in the background, it caught my ear—and my interest. If you own or have listened to any of their work from their two full length albums or their debut EP, Hunting Ghosts, you’ll likely know exactly what I’m talking about. As it goes with most music, however, they may not be your “bag”.

Could you give a brief history of Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party. I know that the band was formed in Glasgow, what’s the story behind moving to Vancouver?
The band formed in 2006 in Glasgow, Scotland. Upon writing a bunch of
material in Scotland, we went our separate ways only to reunite in 2009 to
start gigging and recording. We ve since spent a lot of time in Russia
studying oligarchs as this is something we eventually hope the band will
emulate.

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, Diamond Dancer is comprised of long-time friends and lovers who have traded in their dysfunctional hardcore punk rock past for twinkly guitar hooks and heartfelt vocals.
The band encapsulates a throwback indie, ’90s emo revival feel – tropes of somber music accompanied by a shy narrator singing seriously about mundane problems.
Some have named Diamond Dancer “true emo”, as well as one of the first “twinkledaddies” from Vancouver (and possibly Canada.)

I was first musically introduced to Melissa Auf der Maur in 1994 when she became the bass player for the band Hole. I was 16 and very excited that she was in my favourite band not only because she was a young rocking bass player (she was only 22 when she joined) but because she was Canadian, hailing from the great city of Montreal.
Melissa’s music career started to take off in the early 90’s when she met Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) after a Pumpkins show in Montreal when she apologized for her friend who had heckled him and thrown a beer bottle at the band while on stage

Interview and photos of the visit of one of the best indie bands in Mexico.
The band visited Vancouver for the fourth time with their second album (Tocadiscos) under their arms and this is what it happened:
Video interview: Nick Pannu.
Photographs: Ashley Irwin (Nevena photos) and Stephanie Bentzen.
Write up: Oswaldo Perez Cabrera.
Mama Pulpa almost didn’t come into the country, but being a well known band in this territory and in Mexico Immigration gave them green light at the last minute. So their visas came through, but with a catch: They could only …

This spring was the kick-off to radio talent search contests a-plenty, and none have garnered more buzz in the lower mainland of BC than The Shore 104.3FM Song Search and the PEAK Performance Project. With the Shore’s Song Search right down to the Top 10 and the PEAK Performance Project down to the Top 20, there is one band that cruised onto both lists right under the radar. They are The Matinee and the first time I saw them perform, they caught me quite off-guard. These boys play a brand of roots/alt-country/folk/rock that summons the ghosts of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Band,

“We’ve been on tour for 2 months doing a square of the continent. But favorite shows…NYC and LA are always great, Long Beach especially. Our show in Charlotte, North Carolina was my favorite because we played with a band called Brain F that I really love. Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Oakland, Gainsville, Ann Arbour, Chicago, SF. It all kind of bleeds together now. This was an interesting tour.”
