Kidstreet is an electronic trio from Waterloo, Ontario. Keeping it in the family with Karl Snyder on drums, his brother Cliff on synth and guitar and younger sister Edna on piano and vocals, this relatively new band is already making waves.

From the word “go,” It’s All True has a spring in its step as opening track “Itchy Fingers” features lofty bpms in a range never explored on record by the group before and then, just as suddenly, the band shift gears to the sparse, brooding “Playtime.” From the confident stomp of “You’ll Improve Me” and the sophisticated pop of “A Truly Happy Ending” to the epic album closer of “Banana Ripple,” It’s All True is by far the Junior Boys most accomplished album to date.

On the surface of their current record (about which Grassia and Azzolini say is their best work), one can easily hear the classic ‘Golden Dog’ sound and feel the familiar frantic bop and bounce that has always been their calling card.

Modernboys Moderngirls are either punk rockers who play soul music or soul musicians who play punk rock. nfluenced by the likes of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, the New York Dolls, Otis Redding and crates upon crates of classic soul and punk records, Modernboys Moderngirls are a 21st century garage soul band.

In the fall of 2009, they released their self-produced debut, ten song album, I Might As Well Break It.

Olenka Krakus is Polish but has Vancouver ties, having lived and played here for a long time she left a lot of friends here. She was born in Poland but grew up in Canada. Now she resides in London Ontario but she played the Biltmore on a visit to Vancouver with a stellar line up that included members of Aunts and Uncles and Like Animals Again who also played the show. Olenka and the Autumn Lovers formed in early 2008. has a sound that mingles a strong Eastern European influence with elements of North American country and folk music. The band’s diverse instruments (cello, violin, accordion, trumpet, saxophone, lap steel, mandolin and glockenspiel) provide a unique musical backdrop to Olenka’s sophisticated, often narrative, form of songwriting. Influenced by her memories of Communist Poland and by the country’s folklore, Olenka investigates themes of social injustice and personal responsibility, populating her songs with melancholy outcasts from both Polish and Canadian landscapes.

Craig Smith possesses a warmth and honesty that permeates everything he touches, everyone he meets, every song he sings.

Although he learned piano, guitar, and saxophone at a young age, John O (as his friends call him) was more into playing dress-up with his cousin Lisa while dreaming of a life beyond the Toronto suburbs where he was born. Of course, being the only kid on the block that wanted to pair a ballerina tutu from the tickle trunk with hockey gloves didn’t always make things easy. As he explains, “when I was in high school I never really identified with that macho jock attitude but because I played on the basketball team I couldn’t hang with the goths and punks either. Let’s just say I spent alot of time alone trying to figure myself out.”

I met Jimmy Hayes from Harlan Pepper at 88.1 FM CKLN in Toronto just last week. He was fresh off a bus from a show.
