Letting go of old ways, looking inwards, finding a sense of freedom. This is where Victoria folk-rock duo Jon and Roy placed their focus while recording their fourth album, Let It Go. he duo went searching for something intangible while recording Let It Go, and suffice it to say, they found it. Freedom – from artistic constraints, from audience expectations – became a recurring theme for the pair during the creation of the new album. If there was one rule for longtime friends and collaborators Jon Middleton (guitar/vocals) and Roy Vizer (drums/percussion), it was to have no rules at all. “We felt much more free on this album,” says Middleton. “It was a very natural process in this way, similar to how we would approach a live show.”
The best and most important festival in the capital of BC is back with an impressive line up that includes international super stars like Toots and the Maytals, The Pietasters, The Katchafires among others, local Vancouver sensations like Los Furios and The Boom Booms and local Victoria darlings like Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra and Jon and Roy. In addition there are some Latin bands coming like Pobreska and Bachaco.

What do you sing about when there’s nothing left to talk about? That’s the question that Sam Coll (vocals), Ryan Stringer (bass) and Mike Sanderson (guitar) were asking when, in 2009, the three cerebral misfits happened to connect over craigslist. A few jam sessions later, a lasting musical connection had been made and Year of the Rat was established for good.

This quintet quickly developed a loyal fan base by playing over 60 shows in their first year. They originally garnered much attention through their hugely popular weekly session at the Canoe Brewpub in Victoria, B.C.. The night quickly grew in popularity and soon consistently packed the 410-person venue to capacity. Before the close of 2009, the group had also enjoyed such highlights as playing to 12,000 people at Rexall Place in Edmonton, having songs licensed and used in an internationally distributed surf film, and a trio of sold out shows at fan favourite Sugar Nightclub.

This is where you expect to find a bunch of bullshit about who we are, how we formed, what our influences are, right?
I respect you too much to tell you about that sort of minutiae. It’s a not-so-interesting tale involving craigslist and late-night dollar burritos. Besides, it wouldn’t really tell you anything about us. When’s the last time you really got to know somebody by reading about them on a website? If that’s the case, then Omar Khadr’s a war criminal and Woody Allen’s a pedophile, …

Tom aka: Dj Nemesis been going strong in the dj scene for over 10 years now and his Funky Pumpin French House has been moving people on the dance floor at many notable events like Shambala and Burning Man. He also makes a point to frequent the Hush venue in Victoria Canada.
His love for the electronic music scene runs deep in his family. His step dad had been a disco dj back in the day and ever since he passed down his decks to Tom, they have spent little time apart. Self taught with a bit of guidance from Shaun Ward at the beginning stages.
