In the style of the early 1900’s, the production features cirque performers, dancers, and comedic actors all backed by an acoustic swing band. The show’s highlight is a duo from Los Angeles who performs acrobatic stunts on pogo sticks. Collectively they hold eight Guinness World Records, and have a long list of prestigious appearances including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, America’s Got Talent, and Ellen.

Get ready to be whisked away by the host of quirky characters into the magic of a bygone era. Dressing spiffy for the occasion in your vintage attire is welcomed. It’s a romantic place to take your sweetie for Valentine’s Day, but is also appropriate for the whole family.

Steam Whistle brings Unsigned to Vancouver!

Microbrewery Steam Whistle hosts first ever UNSIGNED Vancouver – a concert in support of Canadian independent music artists. The Unsigned series started in Toronto four years ago, soon making its way to Calgary and Edmonton, with the idea of giving back and helping the growth of Canada’s indie music community. Thursday January 26 2012 is the first time that a series will be taking place in Vancouver at Biltmore Cabaret featuring Sidney York, The Ruffled Feathers, and Treelines. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are only $5 at the door with 100% of proceeds going back to the community through Music BC.

About the Bands:

The Ruffled Feathers

Gina Loes (vocals, guitar, ukulele), Charley Wu (keys, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Andrew Lee (trumpet, vocals), Sam MacKinnon (drums), Matty Jeronimo (bass, guitar) hail from all corners of North America. They are known for their combination of haunting female lead vocals, endearing harmonies, folk-inspired mandolin, and brazen horns. Taking inspiration from the likes of Beirut and Joanna Newsom, The Ruffled Feathers weave fables of revolutions, love stories, and cities away from home. Listeners expecting conventional guitar-driven indie-pop will find themselves swept into complex arrangements of trumpets and mandolins instead.

Sidney York
From the opera stage and the orchestra pit into indie music, Sidney York is the proof that band geeks are cool. Her album “Apocalyptic Radio Cynic” is a creative experiment of mixing their ghosts of musical past with the current influences of their independent music contemporaries that infuses classical woodwind sonorities on an avant-garde foundation of upbeat and adorable indie pop. Sidney is a blend of “Metric’s indie guitar pop and the sexy playfulness of Hawksley Workman”, and is an act not to be missed.

Treelines
If the Weakerthans had a love child with the Gaslight Anthem, and Joel Plaskett raised that child; you would have something close to Treelines. Their music can be described as an unassuming brand of indie rock, often painting a lyrical picture of anything from the old west, to wintry northern landscapes. There’s a quality about this band that can only seem to be described as sounding nostalgic and ‘unintentionally Canadian‘; something you can’t really pinpoint.

About Steam Whistle UNSIGNED:

Steam Whistle UNSIGNED is an ongoing concert series that showcases Canada’s indie music talent, while also developing its future. Hosted in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver each edition of UNSIGNED features three Canadian artists with all of the ticket sales going back to the arts community through organizations such as Artists’ Health Centre Foundation and Music BC. UNSIGNED has to date featured over 50 independent Canadian acts and have raised over $30,000 for local artists.

Previous bands who played UNSIGNED include: The Rural Alberta Advantage, Austra, The Darcys, Young Empires, Rich Aucoin, The Balconies, Woodhands, Dinosaur Bones, Lioness, Parallels, Make Your Exit, Hooded Fang and Kidstreet.

1489 East Hastings

Don’t miss the biggest party of the 2012 PuSh International Performing Arts Festival! A veritable buffet of creativity spread throughout historic and beautifully restored Waldorf Hotel, the Opening Gala hosted by CTV News anchor Keri Adams and will be packed with live music, video projections, spontaneous performances, and surprise guests.

The cabaret space, hosted by The Sunday Service’s Ryan Beil and author of Vancouver Special Charles Demers, will feature Vancouver’s quick-witted, irreverent, and surprisingly danceable accordion rock band Fang, alongside the ethereal vocals and gorgeous harmonies of e.s.l. About their enchanting sound, Denise Sheppard (music journalist, Rolling Stone) raved “if Charlie Chaplin wrote songs with Bjork to be the soundtrack for a Tim Burton film, their collective musical result would come close to resembling the goodness, timelessness and otherworldliness of e.s.l.”

See you there!

Tall Poppy Records is the creation of renaissance woman, Lee Lindsey.

By Danica Stewart

The independent record label which has now branched into Poppy Cafe embodies everything that Lindsey herself represents: passion, a love for nurturing and supporting great music, and family.

What started off as an independent label and recording studio in London, England, soon sprouted off into Tall Poppy Presents. Lindsey’s networking skills, and experience in the music industry helped her host dozens of extremely successful shows, featuring local and international musicians. It was obvious to everyone involved in the process that Lindsey was destined to bring amazing music to the world. After 4 years of sowing and watching Tall Poppy grow into her passion-driven business Lindsey decided it was time to transplant her family and the company to her homeland of Canada.
Although she had flown across the pond and landed in a very different Vancouver music scene, Lindsey was determined to make Tall Poppy flourish in the Great White North. Throughout the 10 years it has been running, Tall Poppy Presents has featured world renowned acts like Lee Macdougall, KT Tunstall, Marcus Foster, and Kenny Hess to name a few. The seamlessness of the Poppy events is all thanks to Lindsey’s attention to detail, impeccable hosting skills and commitment to making sure audiences can experience a night of unforgettable entertainment.

While at first glance,Poppy Cafe seems to be thriving, there are a few thorns that have threatened it’s very existence. Beneath Lindsey’s stunning exterior and warrior-like confidence, lies a woman who has been through hell and back. Supporting herself and traveling the world in search of work since the age of 15, Lindsey struggled to find her place in the music industry. After marrying and starting a family, she eventually divorced and was left to raise two children as a single mother. Just as Lindsey found her calling and sought to make her dreams a reality once more in Canada, her family home and recording studio burned to the ground in a freak electrical fire in 2007. If ever there had been a reason to give up, Lindsey had had several. And yet this brave woman with the heart of gold pushed on, rising above the tragedies.

So it’s no surprise that two children raised by such a strong and independent single mother would eventually begin to emulate her. Both her son Sam Bradley, and daughter Grace Lindsey are up and coming artists that have large online followings and dedicated fan bases. Bradley had only been playing live shows for a few years, when in 2008, his childhood friend Rob Pattinson used a song that they co-wrote in his movie Twilight. This gave Bradley a bigger following, though it has been his raw talent keeping his audience hooked. Bradley has toured Canada and USA several times, has been on television and radio, and is currently working on his third album release (which his huge following is desperately awaiting).

Grace Lindsey, has never really been in the shadow, despite her start as backup singer for her mother and brother. It was evident to everyone who has heard Grace sing, that she had a real gift for music, and that she too was destined for many successes in the music world. Lindsey has teamed up with fellow YouTube favourite, Sarah Louise, to form the band District Line. As a duo and as an independent musician, Lindsey continues to release videos (which quickly get thousands of hits) and she continues to captivate audiences at each of her live shows.

On December 22, you can be part of the Poppy Cafe magic, as Lee, Sam and Grace will be teaming up to play a very special holiday show. The multi-talented family will also be joined by the Alumni Seycove Choir (2006 Youth Choir of the Year), and Poppy Cafe will be collecting non-perishable food donations for The Salvation Army Food Drive. Without a doubt, this family’s passion and committment to music, and Lee Lindsey’s gift for hosting live shows ensures this show is the best one you will see this holiday season. And of course, the Tall Poppy story is touching reminder that dreams come true, and that love and family are the true reasons to celebrate the season.

Wednesday December 14th @ The Biltmore Cabaret 8pm

Come one come all!! This will be a wonderful night of music presented in collaboration with The Biltmore Cabaret. The Reckoners will be performing as quartet with special guest Scott Smith on lapsteel, pedalsteel, and electric guitar and Jeremy Holmes on stand up bass, banjo, and mandoline. It is our final show of the season and we are very much looking forward to seeing everyone there!!

Cory Woodward will be performing with his new full band.

Peak Performance Top 20 artist for 2011 Redgy Blackout will also be performing!!

More details to come!!!

The Reckoners

Ricardo Khayatte and Christina Simpson, are at the forefront of Canada’s folk revival, delivering their debut EP, …And The Sky Opened Up at a time when music fans are gravitating to something “real.” The six song debut has garnered 4.5 Star reviews in Canada’s major market daily papers like the Vancouver Sun and the Winnipeg Free Press, as well as stellar reviews in the Toronto Star’s “Anti Hit List” and Exclaim Magazine.

Cory Woodward

“The Edmonton-born singer-songwriter has the uncanny ability to spark a connection between himself and some of the greatest musicians of all time,” boasts Exclaim! magazine about Cory Woodward. And since his arrival on the Vancouver music scene five years ago, he has done nothing but prove this statement to be true. Woodward entices listeners with a soothing, Springsteen-like rasp, then blows them away with the unbridled, soulful bellow of Joe Cocker. Like John Lennon or Jeff Tweedy before him, he can paint a bitter picture of life, but always leaves audiences with a message of hope. With the support of his band Woodward delivers a high energy rock show that you soon won’t forget.

Redgy Blackout

At the core Redgy Blackout is Scott Perrie and Jeremy Breaks. Collaborating since ’06, they have toured Western Canada consistently and become an exciting live act. Their newest EP garnered critical acclaim from folk/rock and alt country sources for their mix of styles. The songs are woven together with heartfelt vocals and intricate banjo and guitar work. 2011 has been an exciting year for them with appearances at Pop Okanagan, BC Rivers Day Festival and best of all a Top 20 spot in the Peak Performance Project in BC.

VanMusic is very proud to Present Keith William Miller and some of his friends on December 10th 2011. The night is extra special as all 3 of these artists are breaking into the independent music scene. This is going to be a raw night with some amazing talent. Keith has been playing with The Goat Face Killaz who having been getting some major respect in the Vancouver area. Keith is now starting another project with him playing solo as the singer/songwriter type. His EP is soon to be released and is a great listen. Listen to The Morning After Show on CITR 101.9 fm on Tuesday mornings between 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for pre-released songs.

Keith William Miller

Too many artists labor tirelessly to develop their persona as an artist. They distance themselves from their true personalities and this creates a disconnect between their music and their message. Keith William Miller practices the “what you see is what you get” method. Keith William Miller is a true indie heart; he is humble yet driven to share his visions. Sarcastic, perhaps at times, and wordy at others, but consistent; a true independent artist who will not back down from deriding controversy, an artist searching for honesty and truth. All the while, he is writing the happiest sad music you will ever hear.

Check out Keith’s music on Facebook here.

The Lucindas

What do you get when you cross a couple of urban rednecks with a couple of folk songs? You get the Lucindas. It doesn’t matter how long Rudy and Josh have known each other, or any typical boring story of artistry, what matters is that they kick ass. With music. Blending semi-delicate guitar playing with howling vocals belonging to only the most tormented hillbillies creates a wonderful mixture of what these two fine young men dub “Death Folk”. When listening to the Lucindas, be careful. They have the potential to charm your face off and throw it right back at you. Check em out.

Unkle Jesse

Though he may look like your darling Uncle who brings you those awesome Werther’s originals, he is in no way biologically related to you. Unkle Jesse sings and plays guitar. With his heart. Not literally, though as that is impossible. Jesse is currently going to school studying the art of music, so his talent is only growing in leaps and bounds. With a seasoned voice, gentle guitar, and a hint of oak Unkle Jesse will play you songs that make you wish you were related after all.

The Only Bear Milking, Wizard Chasing, Folk Metaling Band You Need To Know

Scythia will be opening for Finnish folk metal band Korpiklaani and Russian pagan metal band Arkona on December 3rd in Vancouver, at The Rickshaw Theatre as part of the “UKON
WACKA North American Tour”.

“Scythia is both stoked and honoured to play with folk metal’s Heavy weights such as Korpiklaani and Arkona. This night will be a fusion of European and North American interpretations of this genre and it will provide a very enticing reason to come out and rock hard.” commented Scythia vocalist and guitarist Dave Khan.

Scythia will also be headlining Nerd Fest this weekend in Vancouver on Saturday, November 19th and have also had their latest album “…Of Exile” released on September 23rd recently conquer the #1 spot on the Top 20 Canadian Loud Charts for October 2011 [18].

Nerd Fest Trailer

Formed in the latter half of 2008, Scythia is a five piece band that combines haunting folk melodies (emphasized by keyboards and oboe) with the driving force of modern progressive metal to form a raw and powerful sound that is their own. Scythia is not your older brother’s metal band. Unless that band had an oboe of death, echoes of thunder, and a knack for writing folk metal tunes.

So what is Scythia?

Taking its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with a painting of Nordic/Russian warriors riding bears while brandishing swords, Scythia not only “gives the painting musical significance,” but it is also “the name of an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia. The melodies used in our music have a very ancient, sometimes medieval sound, so I wanted to attribute them to an ancient civilization,” says Khan.

In 2010, Scythia released its debut, “…Of War” (originally with violin) which was produced by Shaun Thingvold who has engineered on projects with SYL, Fear Factory, Darkest Hour and many more. Now, following some line-up changes, Scythia will released its second album “…Of Exile”, September 23, 2011.

Yeah, that’s right a party review. How did I land this gig? Oh ya Jordan called me. Our conversation went a little something like this…

Jordan, “Hey Jay, you want to go see A-Trak and Saigon’s DJ Jase for free at the Smirnoff party?”

Me, “Uh, sure.”

And just like that I was whisked into the Smirnoff Night Life Exchange which is fitting for me because I went to Earthdance which was about 60 cities getting together to dance for peace at the same time all over the world and this was about people dancing across five continents for vodka.

Straight up, that’s how I normally take it, because I’m pretty bad ass. However since the Vancouver party was Vietnamese themed I decided to go with the green tea mix with lime or lemon or something. It doesn’t matter because it was delicious, very delicious. The next one after that was pretty good too.

But, I was working so I was on my two drink limit. (Note to wannabe bad assess out there, it is cool to be responsible from time to time.) Thankfully though, there is no limit on the amount of dancing I allow myself at the office.

DJ Jase had me grooving to some fun house tunes with contagious beats and I got my bounce on to some trip hop that was tossed into the mix. I was now warmed up to get my heavy dance swagger on for A-Trak.

Known around the world for his furious melodic hyper groovy scratch abilities and his general super power for making the dance floor go crazy, A-Trak appeared and the dance floor got packed.

Wedged between my date and two cute girls making out I have to admit, that I don’t have a bad review for this party. It was great. The music was amazing, the people were fun and friendly and I got broadcast around the world shaking my ass.

Can’t complain about a Saturday night like that. Well, I could but then I’d be a complete jerk and I’d be lying.

The Broadway Bullies are a real rock band. Anyone who’s been to a show will attest- they hit the stage like a brick sh**house. Showcasing their original talent and their no-holds-barred attitude, the Bullies are unstoppable. This summer the band were chosen by The Pepsi Youth Music Movement as the band to represent Vancouver in their search for 10 bands to represent provinces across the country. The band recorded a song and video (link listed below with full video) with the Pepsi Youth Music Movement, which will be featured on the Pepsi Youth Movement’s 12 Tracks compilation CD.

The Bullies are currently working on their first demo EP with producer Jonathan Fluevog of Vancouver’s Vogville Studios, which will be released in late December at their CD release party at Venue on Granville. The outlooks and attitudes in The Broadway Bullies create an environment in which there is never a dull moment. These guys are packing venues on a bi-weekly basis, selling t-shirts, CD’s, and custom lighters like they’re friggin’ hotcakes, effectively snowballing their way into the ears, minds and hearts of Vancouver, Canada, and the World.

This is one rock and roll party train that you don’t want to miss. The Broadway Bullies will be playing Magnetized Production’s Rock ‘n Roll Mini Festival at The Red Room November 5th alongside Azimyth, Silent Spring, Cupla and Blackout Lights.

About Scythia: Formed in the latter half of 2008, Scythia is a five piece band that combines haunting folk melodies (emphasized by keyboards and oboe) with the driving force of modern progressive metal to form a raw and powerful sound that is their own.

Now, following some line-up changes, Scythia will be releasing its second album “…Of Exile”, again produced by Shaun Thingvold September 23, 2011.

Wednesday October 26th The Cobalt gets classy and oysters will be served.

East coast favourites Paper Lions will bring their indie pop rock to stages across the country this fall on a national tour, along with a ‘taste’ of their home province to each city they visit. After spending a month in Ontario, the band will head west and preview four new songs from their forthcoming LP in the process.

Audio Blood is teaming up with Young Lions Music Club to present “the Paper Lions Rolling Oyster Revue” a tasty idea that sees the band shipping and shucking fresh PEI oysters for fans and friends at day events nationwde.

It all began with the band’s drummer, David MacDonald, has created a lighthearted ‘how to’ instructional video on Oyster shucking. MacDonald, who for two years worked for the PEI Oyster Company, prides himself on the technique he has casually perfected over the years. It was his idea to bring the shelled treats on the road this time, after a tour in 2009 which he – on a whim – brought a cooler full of oysters, and subsequently made quick friends with fellow bands and fans in the parking lot before shows. Says MacDonald: “It turned out be a a great conversation starter, and a way for us to show pride in our home, even when we’re on the road”.

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten an oyster. I’m definitely going to check out this show. Look for an interview and review soon!

Your cart winds along a steep mountain road. With a roar of thunder, the axel breaks. With a flash of lightening, you glance at the surrounding hillside. It looks like you’ll have to spend the night in the old Monastery where three women mysteriously died last year….

Will you make it out alive?

Join us this Halloween as, for the first time ever, we transform the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden into a terrifying Haunted House. Featuring nearly 30 actors, dancers and musicians, this oneof-a-kind experience is inspired by Robert van Gulik’s classic Judge Dee murder mysteries. Brave the Garden’s haunted pathways, uncover clues, then warm your bones at the old Tea House as you piece together the crime. But WATCH OUT! You never know what may be lurking around the next corner. Can you and Judge Dee solve the case before the next victim meets her gruesome fate?

JUDGE DEE & THE HAUNTED GARDEN

October 26 – 31, 2011 | Open: 7pm – 10pm (entry every 10 minutes) | Adults:

$12, Students: $10

At the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, 578 Carrall St. at Pender | Tix: 604-662-3207

How does it work?
1. Pick your Judge Dee show date. Purchase your tickets at the door or over the phone at 604-662-3207.
2. Show up anytime between 7pm and 10pm. We’ll let in audiences of 10 every 10 minutes.
3. Enjoy! The experience is roughly 30 minutes long. Follow the path without pausing, or seek refuge awhile halfway through in the old Tea House, where strange delicacies await. Your ticket is valid for the whole evening, so if you make it to the exit alive you can always line up to enter again.

Who was Judge Dee?

Judge Dee was a famous detective in Tang Dynasty China. Inspired by the many stories celebrating his impeccable record of catching criminals, 20th Century author Robert van Gulik wrote a series of original murder mysteries starring Judge Dee – China’s Sherlock Holmes. Judge Dee is now the subject of a major motion picture: Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.

Nerd Fest, a night of medieval fantasy returns to Vancouver on November 19th at the Rickshaw Theatre with local folk metal clans Scythia, Eye Of Odin and Celestial Ruin. Scythia will be headlining the fest as they have just released their second studio album “…Of Exile” last month to rave reviews and have topped the Canadian college loud charts at #1.

Fantasy metal won’t be the only entertainment at Nerd Fest; the festival also incorporates everything from sword fighting, tattoo artistry, burlesque dancing (Tiffany Truth), fantasy multimedia (films), a costume contest and a multitude of vendors whom will be present to showcase their unique local-made crafts for medieval enthusiasts.

Dave Khan vocalist/guitarist of Scythia and one of the event organizers of Nerd Fest commented on what fantasy fans can expect.

“Nerd Fest is a night dedicated to celebrating our love for all things fantasy. And we will celebrate by making it sexy with burlesque and cool with some really prominent local fantasy bands. We are really stoked to be putting on a multimedia variety night with a theme. It’s been a blast organizing it because it’s been really easy to garner support. The idea seems like something that really resonates with the sponsors and performers that we are recruiting.”
