Synaesthesia

This whole policy of no cameras at gigs is done. Obviously many places state no professional cameras, or no cameras with interchangeable lenses, but what does that even matter any more. With Canon, Panasonic, and Nikon all selling products that you can slip in your pocket capable of shooting photos that one could make billboard ads with being allowed into the shows, often by people not knowing what they are really doing, so where does that really leave this policy? I could understand if they didn’t want people to make money off the photos, okay, but how can you stop the people with the pocket cams from making money, where is the difference. Chances are those people are going to take the photos and post them in a public forum, say facebook or myspace, and often without context.

Sandman Viper Command

When most kids their age were riffling through college textbooks and figuring out the path of least resistance towards some sort of stable income, these small town boys were riffling through their parents record collections, studying the messy emotion-fueled rock of Pavement and the fuzzy post-rock discography of Sonic Youth, dreaming of ways they could marry it all together. So far it hasn’t worn off, being the average age of 21, they still have their collective sights set on a future a little bit more shaky and unstable than the rest of their peers.

Tofu Meat

TofuMeat is indulgence in absurdity, comfort in sonance and sheer thrashing of life and limbs. They want to rock you into delirious ecstasy and make you dance like rabid hedonists…. If you like solid rock and roll with a little grit then check out their tracks, “Girl Listen”, “Uncomfortably Numb” and “Black Leather”.

Shambhala: Festival of LOVE

Deep in the Kootenay Mountain range, the Salmo River Ranch begins its annual transformation. Pristine pastures evolve into a city of 10,000, where nature and technology coexist harmoniously. A community rises, sharing a common goal; celebrating a collective love and respect for music, art and humanity. For five days and four nights time ceases to exist.
This is the crucible of artistry and musical mayhem. This is the zenith of modern underground entertainment.
This is Shambhala.

Mediocre At Best

What I really like about these guys is their stripped bare sound. It’s gritty, electric and echos like a memory of something important you had to say. I really like their song “The Words The World Is Made Of.”

USS (Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker)

These guys have to be one of the hottest bands in Toronto right now, every other person I talk to has mentioned them to me. Consisting of a DJ and a guitar player their sound is cutting edge, tight and exciting. With lyrics that make you think and a heavy groove you can’t help but fall into the soundscape they unleash upon you. I would love to see these guys live!

Japandroids: Power garage noise pop duo

When filmmaker Jorge Pérez y Michel from México and my friend in Spain Jose Luis told me they liked a band called Japandroids from Vancouver I was not surprised. I knew my suspicions were right when I saw them at Shindig and thought these two guys were going to places. A powerful duo with a sonic sound. I think they have assimilated a lot of rock and that shows in their music, I though of a lot of bands while listening to their music, from the Strokes to Trans Am, from the British noise por of Ride or Jesus and Mary Chain to the New York Sonic Youthish bands. But their sound is direct, like a fist, just a guitar and vocals of Brain King and the drums and vocals of Dave Prowse.

Fools and Kings

A vast array of musical influences, from both sides of the pond, led to songs that are lyrical, driven and raw.

Twin brothers Matthew and Gareth Schroenn from Vancouver and Drew Pearcey from Toronto, formed Fools and Kings in the hot summer of 2008 and poured into it the best of their musical experience, cutting away the fat and delivering something that is unpretentious, muscular and real.

Album review: Man up from The Blue Van

Another album jam packed with a late 60’s retro blues high energy sound, that will certainly keep this album on my itune list for a time. As their past albums have proved The Blue Van brings a consistent homage to the greats of of the 60’s psychedelic era. But I agree with with what’s been written over at TO Music Snobs and AltSounds.com. It’s Safe, it’s not ground breaking but it will provide their listeners with a well executed and playful guitar driven rock. If you love the sounds of the Old Navy, The Gap and Apple commercials you are for sure to enjoy this new addition.
