Grounding

What is this? Am I on drugs, because the sound wasn’t sounding like it was supposed to be for a metal band, so I realized this was no metal band. How can I explain? It was like listening to Black Sabbath to the 10th potency of noise but in slow motion, do you know what I mean? like listening to Black Mountain backwards, like a melodic Sunn O, yes like Trans Am meets Sabbath. It is doom metal, dense music. “Progressive, Psychedelic DOOM!” told me Jay. Three guitars, a bass and drums conform the band that sounded like an electric storm that fell into the Pats Pub. Imagine the sound of a thunder that roars for two minutes, then when you stop being afraid of the mega thunder, a tsunami of noise comes to sweep you away while a guitar plays a Sabbbathish solo to comfort you in your agonizing last moments. The early metal broke the shell escaping the genre transcending into the realms of noize. These guys are into something good. Knowing Jay the lyrics will be teeth grinding as well and probably direct to the skull.

Nothofagus

Nothofagus is a genus of 35 species of tress and shrubs that grow in the southern hemisphere, but that is as far as the band relates with the tree, “Because I am from Chile and the tree grows in Chile” told me Javier one day shortly after departing from the defunct mariachi punk band Los Malos, he also said he liked the tree and the name so they baptized the project Nothofagus. The name does carry something mysterious and I think they like that sense of mystery in their music. This experimental duo is comprised of Javier and his wife JP, he is from Santiago de Chile and she is from Bretagne, France. The music is described by them as PsychoNoir Art Folk Acousmatic / Tape music / Folk / Minimalist. Definetely is one of the most interesting musical experiments in Vancouver.

Film: Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void

After 7 years or so, Gaspar Noe, an Argentinean/French director comes back with a mesmerizing production that deals with the after life and the electronic circuits of Tokyo. The night life of the dead. After his controversial film Irreversible, Gaspar is bound to surpass the frontiers of art. Labeled by Noé as a “psychedelic melodrama”. This day-glo nocturne is told through the eyes of an American dope-dealer, Oscar (Nathaniel Brown), tripping on a powerful hallucinogen. That is, until Oscar is shot in a nightclub, when the film takes on the aspect of an out of body experience.
