Joyce Collingwood

Joyce Collingwood was formed on April of 2009 in Vancouver, B.C by five girls with the goal of making raw, unpretentious punk. “What kind of music did we want to play together?”, we asked each other. Fast music. Short songs. Punk. Metal. Like the magic of music does, it happened almost instantaneously. The band member’s musical influences range from thrash metal to cumbia. This mix of styles has been an asset when it comes to songwriting and everybody participates in writing and arranging music.

The Brass Action

Vancouver Based Band The Brass Action

The Brass Action is a Vancouver based, high-energy, horn-driven, ska band!  With two loud horns, we’ve been making noise in Vancouver for the past 3 years.  We’re a 6-piece band that mashes jazz, reggae, ska, and punk into one big ball of flaming music and spits it out at anybody within earshot. Be prepared to dance, skank, mosh, sweat, and find out why we’re called The Brass Action.  We are an independent band and we just released our first EP after many long hard years …

Exclusive Interview with John Armstrong from the Modernettes

Back in 1979 the great punk rock band the Modernettes were formed, fronted by Buck Cherry (John Armstrong), Mary Jo Kopechne on bass and Jughead on drums. Known for such raw pop songs as Confidential, Teen City, Suicide Club and my two favourites Rebel Kind and their big hit Barbra. Now lets fast forward to 2011 with Buck Cherry still in the driver’s seat and a new backing band as his passengers. I was given the opportunity to ask Buck a few questions about his early influences, being a writer and the infamous Barbra.

The New Normal

Well well well, we The Planes here by cancel our rock membership and resign as The New Normal. It all started a while back, we used to be a 5 piece with Graham on keys then for really really good reasons he had to leave. We kept rocking under the name The Planes for the next year and loved and lost Chris on bass and had him replaced with a cooler guy named Brad.

Hard Core Logo, the Punkiest Vancouver play

have been living in Vancouver for more than 12 years and I never felt so Vancouverite than after seeing this punk play, Hard Core Logo, an homage to Vancouver and more particularly to the Vancouver punk scene. It was nice to take a stroll down to memory lane and find out that all the Vancouver references were so crystal clear to me, I could relate to all of them except maybe the Smiling Buddha which I never had the chance to check out. But there is an homage to the Railway club, East Van, the BC Liquor stores, the Subhumans, Extra Old Stock and of course CiTR via Nardwar. All these things that only a true vancouverite will know. The play is really entertaining, specially if you have read the book by Michael Turner or seen the film by Bruce McDonald.

The Mark Inside

It is entirely possible that The Mark Inside’s new EP False Flag may never have seen the light of day. Myself and the rest of the band—Geoff Bennett, Gus Harris, and Reade Ollivier—have had to struggle a long time to get this out to you and to get where we are today. But I think we’ve come out the other side stronger, self-possessed artists (yes I am willing to label ourselves as such) content to live and die by our collective sword. We have lived this music inside and out and mean every word, beat and note of it.

Tom Fun Orchestra

Born somewhere in the north Atlantic on a large fishing vessel, Tom’s mother was an Austrian gypsy who had disguised herself as a male deck-hand in order to board the ship and create a new life on the other side. Her identity was revealed when she went into labour and shortly after Tom’s birth was forced to walk the plank. Tom was taken ashore by an aging sailor named Whisky Gibbons who deposited him at a brothel on the edge of a small town somewhere outside of anywhere. So it was that Tom spent most of his childhood being raised by call girls, learning cuss words and card tricks from tramps, vagabonds and outlaws, developing a fondness for cheap perfume, bourbon & show tunes

Wildlife

Wildlife is a power pop band with strong elements of rock and soul. I just found out about these guys and while I don’t know much about them, I am kind of hooked on their MySpace page right now. I think I’m going to have to buy their debut album “Strike Hard, Young Diamond” which went up on itunes yesterday.

But a memorial service was held recently and we researched a little bit on the internet.Their parents divorced, his mother died in a train accident and his father also died years later at age 46. The punk family had bad luck during their time, battling alcoholism drug addiction homelessness and other problems common in American societies.
