If you think the reggae community is not very abundant in Vancouver… Think again. I went to the Reef restaurant today and talk to a couple of people from the Vancouver Reggae industry and they gave me the scoop. Mr.Metro, a music producer and a former Juno Award Winner and Much Music Award winner, told me the scene is about to explode, they are recording a lot of local artists in their studio off Commercial Dr. so you can be sure that a lot of music is about to erupt from these guys. But in the meantime we also talked to Maxine Burrell who is one of the founders and president of the West Coast Reggae Caribbean Music Awards, an organization that is going to recognize and unite not only the reggae and the hip hop community, but all the Afro Caribbean music in BC.

Current Swell

Current Swell plays the Performance Works, part of Winteruption!
Current Swell was created 5 years ago in Alberta‚ Canada with three friends Scott Stanton‚ Davers Lang and Louis Sadava. The band relocated to Victoria BC in summer 2006 recognizing that their roots rock reggae sound echoed the spirit of the West Coast surf rock roots community. Three critically acclaimed albums “So I Say”‚ “Trust Us Now” and “Protect Your Own” supported Current Swell’s inclusion as opening act for artists such as Xavier Rudd‚ The Beautiful Girls‚ Ash Grunwald‚ Bedouin Soundclash‚ The Beach Boys and Daniel Wesley. Festival presenters and promoters took notice with Current Swell appearing at diverse national festivals such as Mt.Tremblant Blues Festival‚ Rifflandia‚ Ottawa Bluesfest‚ Open Sky festival‚ 2010 Olympics and Whistler WS2.

This post of the BEST indie bands in Vancouver will be divided in two, in this first one we are going to explore the indie of the indie, bands that are emerging, new, fresh, experimental, not so well known, not established, they play in clubs and pubs but that we and our readers like and see and even befriend some of them. Some are not that new either but all of them have achieved success and buzz this last year so we include them here in our humble lists of our favourites. May this list serve as a recommendation for our overseas readers, may it serve as a reference, but also as an aid for these struggling artists. Pigeon Park
