Quit The City

Following the footsteps of Vancouver bands like The Stolen Organ Family Band, Two Apple Tobacco and Redrick Sultan comes Quit The City to play the Indie Pop Vancouver Series presented by CiTR radio and VanMusic on January 6th. Also on the bill Karen Fowlie and Mouthful of Daisy. The band was formed in Calgary two years ago by two musicians eager to play music. It seems that a lot of Calgarians are coming to town to become part of the musical movement that is happening right here in our city. This exodus of musicians is benefiting our community by bringing new sounds and new energy, Quit The City is an example of that. Don’t miss the electrifying experience of their reverberations of their psyche.

Quoia

This quintet quickly developed a loyal fan base by playing over 60 shows in their first year. They originally garnered much attention through their hugely popular weekly session at the Canoe Brewpub in Victoria, B.C.. The night quickly grew in popularity and soon consistently packed the 410-person venue to capacity. Before the close of 2009, the group had also enjoyed such highlights as playing to 12,000 people at Rexall Place in Edmonton, having songs licensed and used in an internationally distributed surf film, and a trio of sold out shows at fan favourite Sugar Nightclub.

Mushy Callahan

All members of the band share a vision of reigniting the scene of Canadian music through writing, performance and touring.

Mushy Callahan began all playing together as children over a decade ago in Western Canada during the early 1990’s. The musicians split-up to play with other hard, pop, and alternative rock bands in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Québec. After years of writing, touring and performing nation-wide, they were reunited and formed a new band, Mushy Callahan, that has now caught the attention of the Toronto music scene. Noah (lead vocals, …

The Ruffled Feathers

The Ruffled Feathers climbed precarious cliffs and clambered over felled logs on the last sunny day of the season in a no-trespassing zone on a quest to find their spirit animals. A pair of seagulls and the crewmen of a tugboat were the only audience to a song about a castle floating over the Soviet Union

Azimyth

Influenced by their own music-minded families and the sounds of rock pioneers like Black Sabbath, Nirvana, The Sex Pistols and Nine Inch Nails, three high school students joined forces in 2002 and were inspired to create a raw rock ‘n’ roll sound – ripe with analog flavour, shredding guitar solos, mindful lyrics, constant energy flow, and unwavering musical honesty.

A decade later, Corey Allan Hawkins, Arlen Chudley, Rory Chudley – and newcomer Andy Laissue – are Azimyth, a band that bleeds rock ‘n’ roll and has worked alongside industry vets Steve Albini and Tom Baker, and played to sold-out Vancouver audiences. Azimyth’s self-titled debut album is the realization of its niche sound and validation of its self-directed philosophy.

Kill Matilda

Kill Matilda is a relative rarity:  a female fronted cyberpunk group. But that’s just beginning.
Out front is Dusty Exner, daughter of a couple of biker parents from Winnipeg who was born on the same day Chernobyl melted down.  She’s married to Mykal Exner, the band’s bass player.  Guitarist Marlene Loud is a classically trained pianist who prefers Fugazi.  Pynner, the drummer, is an accomplished ventriloquist.  And they have a touring guitarist named Dave Fuckin’ Roberts.
Sort of writes itself, don’t it?
As seen on MuchLoud and MuchMusic!

Redrick Sultan’s live show is an intensely high energy affair. Their music combines catchy melodies with intricate arrangements, avante-noise with beautiful party grooves, and all the while keeping each show unique with an intuitive improvisation that grew organically from 9 years of playing with each other. With an over-riding sense of musical exploration and adventure, Redrick Sultan is a band that keeps you on your toes.

NORTH EAST BISTRO

I thought you might like to read little bit about this obscure Montreal band that plays a mix of dark rock with trippy themes and instrumental dreamy pieces. Their new CD is a compilation that goes from 1995 to 2005 of their best songs. Before my life is one of the most interesting pieces where they use loops for the vocals. Die Young reminded me of the new wave dark bands from the 90s. Then in reprive they even have poetry in Spanish. The CD is really eclectic, the voice of the vocalist is close to that of Swan’s Michael Gira and actually the duo that Ian and Caro do in some pieces reminded me also of this legendary band called The Swans. The lyrics are explicit, the instrumentation is Gothic in some themes with wild metalish vocals.

The Golden Dogs

On the surface of their current record (about which Grassia and Azzolini say is their best work), one can easily hear the classic ‘Golden Dog’ sound and feel the familiar frantic bop and bounce that has always been their calling card.
