Ray Davies of The Kinks at The Vogue Theatre on July 13th

Ray Davies of The Kinks with guests The 88

For those that have wondered who was responsible for bringing distorted guitar into the world of rock n roll, look no further than the opening of “You Really Go Me” by The Kinks. Therein lies the first punk, garage rock and metal threads, weaving their way into the fabric of rock n roll. That song, and decades of music by The Kinks have provided the inspiration for not only genres but countless musicians, The Who, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, The Pixies and …

prOphecy sun is East Vancouver’s noise darling – a siren who creates ghostly improvisations, looping vocal drones and free style field recordings using breathing & throat singing, a handmade theremin and a knapsack full of customized musical objects.
Her third album Bird curious was recorded almost entirely in her living room using an iPhone, with the exception of one track, recorded while riding her bicycle.

Review of This is THE SHOES and Devil in the Woodshack

By Corina Pilay
Our Indie Pop Vancouver Series Vol. XXIV on Friday, March 30 claimed a brand on my musical soul as the British Ex-Servicemen’s Association housed two remarkable Vancouver bands, Devil in the Wood Shack and this is THE SHOES. It is evident that they are capable of reviving Vancouver’s musical soul. In a city where the music scene is slowing fading out, financial hardship ails our lives and the spectacle prevails over integrity, it is a comfort to know that there are still great bands hidden in the cracks for us to discover.

How To Make Your Venue Musician Friendly

By Nathan Shubert.
Oddly, over the years I’ve found that many music venues are setup in such a way that they actually make things more difficult for the musicians on gig night. This paradox is quite puzzling as for many of these venues, hosting live music is their primary business. Essentially, bands (and beer) are their product. Without live music, they wouldn’t have a business. That being the case, one would think these venues would do their absolute best to ensure the comfort of musicians, and create an environment where musicians feel relaxed, at ease, and creative. Unfortunately this isn’t always the case.

The following is a list of things I feel venues should keep in mind, and will help make their facilities more musician friendly, and in turn more conducive to creativity. If I’ve missed any that you have noticed in your gigging, add it to the comments bellow this post.
