Sunday May 23rd, the night of the CD release party for the Get Down and I’m running late. My friend Evil Patrick and I hop on his scooter and arrive at the Railway Club, with mascara running down my face and Evil always the gentlemen helping me wipe it off, we head in just before the Get Down hit the stage.
The place is very busy, and it’s pretty obvious that the Get Down’s audience has increased in numbers since the last time I’d seen them. This of course doesn’t surprise …

“Bloodied But Unbowed” Interview with Director Susanne Tabata
The years 1977 to 1983 were very important for Vancouver’s punk rock music scene. In Susanne Tabata’s new documentary Bloodied But Unbowed she maps out those years in a way that will inspire both old and new punk rock fans alike.
1) Bloodied But Unbowed includes some amazing vintage footage and I heard that one of the hardest parts of making this film was deciding what to leave out. How did you make the final choices on what to include in this film?
I think …

VanMusic Interview With “No Fun City” Directors
Photo: Bella Lugosie
When I got a chance to chat on the phone with Melissa James and Kate Kroll about their new documentary film No Fun City, I jumped at the opportunity. I was excited to talk about the film as it focuses on the Vancouver music scene and its ongoing fight with the city to keep it alive. Vanmusic is very much aware of the issues involving Vancouver’s liquor regulations, condo development, noise complaints, evictions, police raids, lawsuits and the commercialization of bigger venues. …

Vancouver boys, glowing in the funk and taking it to the people, let the funk surround you, get up and be Unified!
West coast summer vibe is how The Unified became…unified. Groovin’ beach jams, rockin house party’s, and fly by the seat of your pants improvin’ has brought together the 6 musicians that make up the Unified, and has helped mold their funky/reggae/rootsy sound.

We here at Vanmusic are deeply saddened of the sudden passing of Devon Clifford. You Say Party We Say Die are an amazing Vancouver band and our hearts go out to them and to Devon’s family and friends.
For those who don’t know, while YSPWSD were performing at the Rickshaw Theater this past Friday night (April 16), Devon collapsed on stage and was rushed to hospital, where he died early Sunday morning (April 18).
Its been reported that he suffered a brain hemorrhage and following neurosurgery, he fell into a coma and …

Brody Dalle
I can’t stop listening to the Spinnerette album. I love every song and its just completely golden. Even though Brody is just now reaching her 30’s she been in the music game for a long time. Starting at only 14 years old she played in her first band called Sourpuss.
At a Summersault Festival in Australia she met Rancid front man Tim Armstrong. And at the age of only 18 ballsy Brody married Tim (he was 12 years her senior) and moved from Australia to Los Angeles and that is …

Babes In Toyland
Lori Barbero, Kat Bjelland, Maureen Herman
Must own: Fontanelle
I love Kat’s loud, venomous, dramatic, powerful vocal range and her aggressive lyrics and like Courtney Love (who was/is her sometimes best friend)she dressed in baby doll/kinderwhore dresses. Kat is currently in a band called Wife Katastrophy.
Lori Barbero is legendary drummer and since Babes has been a record label owner, a band manager and continues to play music.
Maureen Herman is a serious bass goddess who played gut-pounding beats over Kat’s howls and screams.
Some history: before Babes there was Sugar Babylon …

We all know that the amazing Kim Gordon sings, plays guitar and bass in the band Sonic Youth but did you know that she also has a band called Free Kitten? That she’s a producer, for example: Hole’s exceptional debut full length CD Pretty On The Inside.
She is wife to band mate Thurston Moore and Mother to Coco Hayley Gordon Moore.
She’s an established artist and curator.
Deciding there was a need for cool clothes for cool Moms she decided to launch two fashion lines one called …

YES I’M IN THE BAND SO FUCK RIGHT OFF! The Runaways…
There are no are apologizes.
She does whatever she wants and doesn’t even think twice.
Her vocals are sassy and extreme; she plays the guitar or bass or drums with passionate skill, she may have bruises down her arms and legs, a bloody lip or black eye, some hair ripped out perhaps. She takes no prisoners. The music screams with fury. And at this moment I don’t fear anything or anyone…
For the next few weeks I am going to feature …

Vancouver is a musically vibrant city. In the 80’s we had great bands such as Spirit of The West, 54-40 and Skinny Puppy. In the 90’s we had prominent bands such Nardwuar the Human Serviette and his band the Evaporators, Age of Electric, Econoline Crush and Matthew Good. Now in the 2000’s the Indie music scene is thriving (some bands with both critical and commercial success) with bands such as the New Pornographers, You Say Party We Say Die, Mother Mother, CR Avery, Jess Hill, The Heard, The Get Down, …

Can you believe that on April 5th it was the 15th Anniversary of Kurt Cobain´s death?
FIFTEEN YEARS!!! ALREADY!! It’s just another reminder that I am getting old..I was 16 in 1994 so you do the math…
So I thought in honor of Kurt I am going to give you all a semi-sort of history lesson on Nirvana and the 90´s Seattle Grunge scene. I don´t think Kurt really liked the term Grunge or being a part of any scene. But Kurt didn´t seem to like a lot of things and this …

In 1998 my sister Lindsay walked almost 1,400 kilometers
from the Northern East tip of Scotland (John O’Groats) to the south part of England (Land’s End) in 58 days to help raise awareness for Alzheimer disease. Having lived in Scotland for 4 years she saw our Grandfather suffer from the disease. Her goal was to raise money and awareness for a disease that currently has no real known cause or cure. Apparently in Scotland you are not allowed to ask for money so the only indication anyone had as to …
