‘Old Ideas’ By Leonard Cohen!

When I was asked to review Leonard Cohen’s new CD I was overjoyed! I have always been influenced by Leonard and was looking forward to his album release “Old Ideas” before even being given the honor of reviewing it.
One of the things that I like about listening to a new album is rushing through the first time and quickly listening to all the songs and then sit back and really take in the music the second time. With ‘Old Ideas’ its really hard to rush through …

Their sound was full and vibrant and those twinkly guitar hooks had me feeling like I was at a show that was a mixing of early Smashing Pumpkins, Silversun Pickups and My Bloody Valentine.

On Thursday February 2nd 2012 a mere hop into the ever aforementioned final year of mankind, I decided to take the year by the horns so to speak and went to The Biltmore to check out Jakalope.

I was able to sit down with Jodi on a Tuesday night at VanMusic’s Open Mic at Displace Hashery in Kits. There she began to tell me how this work of art (in more ways then one) was created

Vancouver/Toronto band The Manvils swirl their magic wands and come up with a brilliant EP called Black Tornado. A video of the song Turpentine gives you an idea about how Mikey and the band see the world and themselves.

I had a great time going to different festivals and taking advantage of all the shows. For a lot of the shows I got to personally meet the entertainers and the people working behind the scene

VanMusic: I’m here with Jimmy Cummins aka. I Braineater, well known musician and artist in Vancouver and Internationally around the world.

Jimmy Cummins: In various circle yes.

VM: So my first question for you is what came first your desire to make music or your need to create art?

JC: I started drawing when I was 3 or 4 years old, so I loved drawing from an early age. It’s been kind of a drive, I think you just get born with it or you don’t. And if you are born with it, the urge is always there. When the punk rock scene came around it was great because it was a time when the idea was, who cares?! Who cares if you don’t know how to do this or that. If you want to do it, then do it! So I was like I want to do it!

2011 was a memorable year for events, festivals and hockey! This year has been full new and exciting things for me! I decided to take myself away a little more from the computer and start attending more events. I have talked to a lot of you on different social media sites and through email but there was never a personal face between us. 2011 was a year that I got to personally meet a lot of you. These are just a few of things that I got to do and some of the events and festivals that I have attended, worked with or organized. It really all started in January…

Ricardo Khayatte from The Reckoners invited me as their guest to the show on Decemeber 14th 2011. As a added bonus to the night there was a kick ass bill lined up!

Josh’s set was bare bones acoustic and heartfelt, his soft voice and lyrics reveal an intelligent romantic soul. Being the first musician of the night Josh had the dubious task of warming the crowd up which is always a challenge for one man on a stage with an acoustic guitar.

Gabriel Savage of the Vancouver band THE NICHE who were the Band of the Month with CFOX this past October 2011. There is a lot of buzz about this band because they are a performance based band with terrific music.
