Jesse Zubot: From laurated violinist to

entrepeneur

By Oswaldo Perez Cabrera

This is the second artist for the series Intelligent Music from Vancouver or better said, demential sounds from the city of rain. Jesee Zubot is the founder of the excellent record label Drip Audio records and he has won the best violinst of the year at the National Jazz Awards of Canada,  first in 2003 and later in 2008 and 2009. He is one of the most prolific artists of the country and has collaborated with a wide variety of musicians ranging from acustic pieces to electronic ensambles. On the acustic side he was one half of Zubot & Dawson whose last material was produced by Lee Townsend who also produces Bill Frisell. Zubot is a member of the Great Uncles of the Revolution with Toronto bass player Andrew Downing and trumpetist Kevin Ricotte. Both recordings have won a Juno award.

Jesee Zubot has also collaborated with most of the experimental and free jazz musicians of Vancouver lending his talent to the improvised musical movement as well. Among the artists with whom he has collaborated we find François Houle, Eugene Chadbourne, Evan Parker, Secret Mommy, Torsten Muller, Dave Douglas, Peggy Lee, Matthew Bourne, Orkestra Rova, Dylan van der Schyff, Tony Wilson, Ron Samworth, and among some of the international artists we have Nels Cline, Fred Frith, Joe Phelps as well as several rock bands like the Butless Chaps, Oh Susanna, The Be Good Tanyas and Toronto super sensation, Stars.

In 2005, Jesse released two albums with the names LaConnor y Zubotta in his record label. LaConnor is an electroacustic work of art that won him praise in Exclaim! and Discorder, both put him on the top of the charts of the Avan Gard music. CBC gave it some air waves as well. Zubotta is another discording piece with electronic touches and elcectic voices, not vocals, just voices. His last album as a solist tells us about ways that he looks to explore. Dementia was made in 2006 and is a multi-instrumental abstraction that explores the sounds inside a demented mind. It is magnificent.

Zubot has new projects, he is a hyperactive soul always seeking for new horizons and eager  to meet minds with affinity and love for exploration. Recent examples of this include ZMF Trio which stands for Zubot, Martin and Fond. The trio is formed with New Yorker Joe Fond in bass, Torontian Jean Martin on drums and Zubot who shines with his instrument. Jesse Zubot is also part of Fond of Tigers, one of my personal favourite bands. This is an ensamble that gather seven of the most creative musicians in Vancouver, but I will do a post about them later. But you can check them out at the TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival when they play at the Commodore Ballroom with Deerhoof on July 3rd.

So follow the lead of Jesse Zubot, it will take you through a fantastic journey with his music and with the music he is editing in Drip Audio Records.
