About Ode to Joy
For the first half of 2012 Vancouver songwriter Corbin Murdoch journeyed across the globe in search of unusual musical experiences. His travels took him from Timbuktu, Mali to the Baranquilla, Colombia. Everywhere Murdoch went he not only discovered incredible music, but also a palpable sense of optimism about the future often absent in his home country. The resulting song-cycle, Ode to Joy, was written upon Murdoch’s return to Canada as part of a residency at The Bruno Arts Bank in Bruno, Saskatchewan. The 12 new songs are about joyful rebellion, taking the future back from those that tell us it doesn’t exist, and trusting in our capacity to create the future we deserve.

The new songs will be recorded with Polaris Prize shortlisted producer Jesse Gander at The Hive Creative Labs in February and released as a full length in the summer of 2013.

After almost a decade together as a band, The Nautical Miles are confident collaborators excited to push themselves in new and exciting directions. Ode to Joy blows open their palette of sound to create a hook-laden, percussion centered song-cycle unlike anything they’ve created to date.
