His concert experience rings through at every gig

A guitar shredding skater from the prairies, Rob Malowany rolled into Vancouver’s music scene with plans and a passion to make them happen. Recording under the alias devilsplender, the bandleader/songwriter/producer has 6 full length albums to his credit. Hometown Riot (2009) is the latest.

His concert experience rings through at every gig. Sharing bills with such rocking notables as The Dudes, Black Mountain and the legendary NoMeansNo as well as roots and blues mainstays such as the Lowest of the Low, the Bughouse 5 and Rodney DeCroo & The Convictions, the devilsplender show is varied as his influences. The word is getting out that these are no-miss shows.

“Growing up, I wanted to be Pete Townshend of the Who, his showmanship is critical in my structuring music for performance,”  says Malowany. “But Paul Westerberg of the Replacements is the comparison I get the most and that’s a huge compliment. STINK was a landmark album for me.”

“Rounding out my top 5 would have to be The Band and the Beatles — no explanation needed — and Elvis Costello for how he pens pop, rock and roll and a great ballads.”

DIY and largely self-financed, managing and producing all of his CDs, Malowany maintains a foothold in the music biz as a soundman, booker and more.

“I’m fine with my DIY strategy, I’ve been doing it for the better part of my life.  A strong work ethic learned on the prairies guides my path to sharing music with heros, friends, and loved ones alike.”
