Hello Trees Music Folks:
Here you go. The May line up for Trees Music Nights. May marks our 6th anniversary of bringing you acoustic music every week. BTW, I’ll be away for the next three weeks so. Ryan Fletcher (the only poet I know who has his own radio show) will be hosting in my place, as well as manning the fort, as usual, on Thursdays.

I ventured into Port Moody one Saturday night to watch some of the best talent the lower mainland has to offer. I have been to a couple of these Acoustic showcases and they are always a great night for both music fans and musicians. The place has great food which is always a plus for the munchies. I must say the sound at the venue is really good, it is intimate and warm. All the different mics placed around the stage contribute to the awesome acoustics. The shows are recorded and the artists get a demo as a souvenir for the night. Welcome to a great acoustic room sound.

Vancouver Indie bands rocked 2011.
2012 is already looking like an exciting year! But 2011 (though not as exciting as 2010) deserves a list of what I think are the best Vancouver bands of the year. Last year continued to show the world that the Indie Music Scene in Vancouver is thriving with amazing talent. So much so that VanMusic and CiTR could no longer ignore the demand to promote both emerging and established bands. We came together to start the Indie Pop Vancouver Series, a musical event that showcases acts …

Every month our friend and musician John Pippus puts this newsletter with the calendar for the Trees Music Series.
Here is the January Music Line-Up at Trees Organic Coffee House. 450 Granville St. Live music every Thursday and Friday at 8PM. As you can see, we have another “artist in residence” this month. Bernard Boulanger (see photo below) plays in a variety of styles and possesses a mordant wit that shows in his lyric writing. Mordant wit. I never thought I would put that in a sentence.

Here is the line up for September. You’ll notice something different. For the first time, I’ve got an “artist-in-residence”. Singer/songwriter Neal Ryan will be playing every Thursday this month. This is a chance for the audience to get to know one performer better. And a chance for Neal to stretch out and make Trees his temporary home. I’ve known and played alongside Neal for quite a few years now and I’m delighted he has agreed to this arrangement. Click on the link to his name in the Sept. 1st listing and that will take you to a YouTube performance he did in Dublin recently (at Bruxelles Bar). You’ll see the power in his writing, and in his performance. One guy with his voice and a guitar. In Neal’s case it makes for a powerful experience. He’s the real deal.

Here is the August schedule. Latest most up-to-datest (cuz there’s been a couple of changes right up until news time). Usual spiel: August line up followed by my low-tech round up of some things that may interest you, mostly related to the local acoustic music scene. Trees Organic Coffee House. 450 Granville St. Every Thursday and Friday at 8PM. By donation. Best cheesecake, best singer/’songwriters, best room to hear the lyrics, etc

How do I book the acts? Usually they find me. First thing I do – if I haven’t heard of them, or if they aren’t recommended by ears I trust – is to listen to the first song on their music player on their website. (It used to be Myspace but since that site has famously imploded in the past year, I’ll listen at whatever site they send me). Within two seconds I can tell if the track is professionally recorded or a low budget (ie hissy, boom-y) home recording. Home recordings aren’t necessarily a bad thing, but it means I have to listen (and look) more closely for other indicators that the act takes itself (and therefore the audience) seriously.
