A day in the Fab Four’s life, it represents its era to a T while remaining timeless. It kicks off with a train trip from Liverpool to London and all sorts of antics, from problems with Paul’s grandfather to hapless reporters, bobbies on the beat, shrieking teen-age girls… Playful and irreverent, the lads remain cool as can be.

Into Eternity is a documentary film directed by Michael Madsen, opening at Vancity Theatre Friday, May 27 – 6:30. With Special guest: Dr. Colin Morton. This documentary poses profound questions not only about the nuclear industry, but also about the very nature of human history.

For connoisseurs of the extreme and unusual, the Vancity Theatre and Alienated in Vancouver present two feature films on avant-garde music and LIVE performances this Monday 7th.

The doomed love story of addicts Jim and Caroline, Berlin’s 10 songs cycle through the couple’s initial drug-euphoric enchantment, their violent betrayals, their fatal collapse. In 1973, it was largely considered a flop. Today, it looks more like a masterpiece.

“Reed had never performed Berlin live in full until 2006, with a landmark five-day stretch at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn. Director/artist Julian Schnabel brought cameras to commit the performance to celluloid; the record’s original producer, Bob Ezrin, was enlisted to oversee. Redemption all around.

Ashes of American Flags is an award-winning film presenting Wilco live in concert during their 2008 tour. Culled from concerts in five quintessentially American venues – Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Tipitina’s in New Orleans, The Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.- the film captures the energy, poignancy and musicality of a Wilco concert and tour. Directed and produced by Brendan Canty and Christoph Green (Sunken Treasure, Burn to Shine), the film intersperses interviews with band members and day-in-the-life footage as the band travels across the U.S. .

The night life of the dead. After his controversial film Irreversible, Gaspar is bound to surpass the frontiers of art. Labeled by Noé as a “psychedelic melodrama”. This day-glo nocturne is told through the eyes of an American dope-dealer, Oscar (Nathaniel Brown), tripping on a powerful hallucinogen. That is, until Oscar is shot in a nightclub, when the film takes on the aspect of an out of body experience.

Rushed into production after Tracy Wright was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (tragically she passed away in June), Trigger is a true labour of love, a communal effort from the best and brightest in Toronto’s film scene. Look for cameos from Wright’s partner Don McKellar, Sarah Polley, and Callum Keith Rennie, but this is really a two-hander at heart, exquisitely performed by Wright and Parker. With music is by Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning. The film was shot in 9 days.

The legendary director Carlos Saura (whose Mozart film I, Don Giovanni also plays at the Vancity Theatre in December) has been exploring the sensuality of dance, light and music on film since the early 80s in films like Blood Wedding, Flamenco, and the Oscar-nominated Tango.
Fados continues in this tradition.
