Interview With Matt Bryant From Headwater
“Headwater is one of the strongest young folk and country acts in Canada…”
Headwater has to be one of my favourite bands to come out of Vancouver. Their great song writing and bluegrass sound hover in my ears constantly as they are one of the most played bands in my itunes library especially their second album Lay You Down.
The band is currently recording their third album and is on a flurry of tours this summer throughout BC and the West Coast. They recently returned from the Yukon where they played the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival. Here’s a quote about Headwater from the festival;
“Peter Beattie, musician and festival stagehand, recommended we check out this talented, young band playing Arts in the Park a few years ago. Their stripped back acoustic set was top-shelf and showed why Headwater is a perennial favorite at the Atlin Music and Arts Festival. This Vancouver-based band plays a blend of original Canadiana roots-folk-rock with a touch of bluegrass, and they sure know their way around their acoustic instruments and vocal mics. Jonas Shandel (guitar, banjo, vocals), Matt Bryant (mandolin, vocals), Tim Tweedale (steel guitar), and Patrick Metzger (upright bass) recorded My Old Friend in 2006 and Lay You Down in 2008, proving Headwater is one of the strongest young folk and country acts in Canada. Don’t miss this band if you want to see where acoustic music is heading.”

Here’s a video from when they played their song Freight Train from Lay You Down live in Norderstedt, Germany in 2010.
