Budget rent a scam

10 February 2010 One Comment

I rented a Toyota Yaris Hatchback on January 22 to January 26 at Budget Rental on 416 West Georgia Vancouver BC license 143 RJK.

The vehicle was returned in perfect condition except for a 1 centimetre chip on the windshield caused by a stone or rock. I had an estimate done by a professional windshield repairman called Too Nice Autoglass who saw the vehicle and said the regular charge for that repair was 50 dollars, Speedy and other companies charged between 50 and 80 dollars including labour. He told me since the chip was less than the size of a loonie it could be repaired WITHOUT the NEED TO CHANGE THE WINDSHIELD. He could do it for 25 dollars. Budget said they HAD to replace the windshield and I had to pay the FULL deductible 300 dollars plus 25 dollars administrative fees. Well, since I was not going to get one of those payday loans, I had to try and fight the charges.

An employee by the name Ibrahim insulted me when I started questioning him about the costs and asked him to explain to me how the insurance that I purchased worked, and since the insurance was useless in this case because I have to pay the full deductible according to him. I proceeded to told him that we could repair the chip for less cheaper. He said “We don’t need customers like you, we are Budget, we do whatever we want” I pointed the fact that this was a scam and tried to explain the mathematics of this system that they have in place only to be yet again insulted, so I had to end my argument with him and escalate to the manager. The manager laughed at me and laughed at the repair guy from Too Nice Autoglass.

Nevertheless we also looked at the possibility of replacing the windshield. Jose from Too Nice Autoglass gave me a quote of 150 dollars which included the cost of the windshield and his labour. We gave both quotes to the manager of Budget rent a car. He “tried” to contact the claims department and was unsuccessful telling me they didn’t answer. It was 3 PM so it was strange that they didn’t answer the phone on a Monday at working hours. He took the information and told me he was going to call me the same day to see what he can do for me regarding this issue.

Monday and Tuesday went by and I didn’t recieve a call. I phone Wednesday and nobody knew anything, the manager whose name is Rome was not there. Thursday the same thing. Friday I checked my credit card statement and a charge of extra 400 dollars was on my credit card. Saturday I finally spoke to the manager, he told me he didn’t know anything and he didn’t call me because it was up to the claims department. I contacted the Claims department and talked with a guy named Adan who found my claim but didn’t know who charged the card, why it was 400 instead of 300 and why nobody contacted me so we could repair the windshield for way cheaper.

A week later I contacted Michelle, after two days of trying, who is in charge of customer service but her English is not very good and I had a hard time understanding what she was telling me. They had my address wrong.
Another two days went by and I recieved a call from Rome, he said they miscalculated the estimate in my contract and that is why I had an extra charhe of a 100 dollars so they refunded me 104 dollars.

1.- I told them I didn’t want the charges on my credit card and they charged it without my authorization.

2.- I could have repaired the windshield for 25 dollars or even replaced it for 150 dollars that would even saved Budget some money. Or would it? If they fix the winshield for 50 dollars, they are making 275 dollars extra from me.

3.- They told me and the contract says that no deductible could be over 300 dollars even if the car is destroyed. They charged me 400 dollars. Then they say is 325 with the admin fee.

4.- When confronted with numbers, employee and manager where rude and disregard the fact that I was a recurring customer which has spent around 10,000 dollars in their company.

5.’ It is my responsability to fix the chip, but was denied the opportunity to do it so they could overcharge me.

6.- The windshield already had PITS. Could the CHIP been produced from a PIT?

7.- They lied since the beginning of this transaction. It all started when I look at the internet and they quote a different price to what really they charge. The website quoted 19 dollars per day, when I got into the locale the price was 29.95 when I pointed to the lady what I saw in the internet she said she could do 24.99 per day. At the end they charged me the 29.95. Plus the insurance which at the end was useless.

8.- They rented a car that probably should have been recalled. According to The Associated Press. Date: Wednesday Jan. 28, 2009 11:49 AM ET
NEW YORK — Toyota is recalling 58,400 of its Yaris subcompact in Canada as part of a recall of 1.3 million of the cars worldwide due to a seat belt defect. The automaker says in severe front-end collisions, the seat belt is at risk of causing a foam pad in the vehicle to ignite.
9.- More than two weeks had passed and I had not recieved any paper work on the mail regarding the charges or the work done on the car.
