We are back with the second installment of the best bands of Vancouver in 2016. This year, 2017 will be challenging for many new bands who will have to go back to playing basements (due to lack of live music venues and exposure). Hopefully some will see the light and these bands that we showcase here will continue to share their talents. In this second part you will find an eclectic mix as well, reggae, hard rock, punk blues, Latin, Ska and more.

John Welsh

Over the last 10 years John Welsh has been performing his eclectic style of music for audiences around Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
He got his start in the college house party scene playing songs everyone could sing along to. Welsh draws influences from artists such as Ben Harper, Manu Chao, Sam Roberts and Joel Plaskett. Harmony’s recordings are hypnotic. She mixes loops with a haunting voice which reminds me of trip hop masters Portishead but she can go to spoken word and more bluesy songs that are almost psychedelic.

Marty Zylstra

Marty Zylstra has a unique Canadiana perspective.
Growing up as a preacher’s kid moving from northern British Columbia to the prairies, Northern Ontario and back set a scene for a future music path as wide is vast.  Marty learned to sing from old time gospel hymns and with influences in the myth and legend of John Lennon, 1970’s Tom Petty & the eclectic of David Bowie to modern Canadian icons Sam Roberts and Sloan and the pop rock British invasion of the 90’s and back again.
After grinding it out regionally in local …

Since their start in 2005, the band has developed far beyond its original ska/reggae format, serving up an original and infectious mix of pop, rock, and punk. The Elixxxirs are a fixture on Vancouver’s live scene and they regularly tour Western Canada, building a reputation as capable hosts for the kind of night that shouldn’t be followed by any concrete plans.

Fantasy Prom

Vancouver, BC’s Fantasy Prom was created on the premise of musical freedom and expression.
The members spent many years playing in “genre specific” bands that were limited and bound to song structures all bands within punk, garage or noise rock typically follow.
Bored with this mindset, founding member and main songwriter Richie Fudalewski began writing and recording music. 28 songs later he recruited like-minded musicians such as  Amelia Fudalewski on vocals (Yung Mums), Denyss McKnight (The Black Halos) and Ross LaLonde (Crystal Swells) to complete the band.
The band’s sound blends ethereal-dreamy melodic vocals over …

Stone Poets

Quirky and a bit different… They’re prince and they’re pauper; outrageous and proper… they’re Stone Poets.

What began as a single songwriting session to write one song, developed into a weekly gathering of creative minds and a virtual song factory. Stone Poets have been described as “dark folk”… folk perhaps, because of the instrumentation: keyboard, two acoustic guitars and rich harmony laden vocals… dark perhaps, as the subject matter in their songs ventures into dangerous waters sometimes…
Cherelle Jardine
She’s been writing and recording since 1995 and has produced 5 CDs in that …
