My Mother the Carjacker – … Or Of Something Else (2014) CD Review

By Corina Moran. Their creativity and dynamic on stage is like no other live band you will see in Vancouver because they are not indie hipsters with a pretentious, moral shtick; they are real men performing real music.

Review – CD and Show Review – City Walls – Engines

Friday April 11, 2014 I was at an energetic show at a new venue on Main Street called Imperial. It was the CD release show for City Walls, formerly known as Louder Than Love. The band has come a long way since winning CFOX’s Seeds in 2011. Check out a live show review and photos of the show, CD review and see a video of their first single “Trapped”.

The Balconies – Review – Fast Motions

Toronto band The Balconies turn up the volume with their new CD “Fast Motion”. This band formed in Ottawa when Jacquie Nevile met Liam Jaeger while they both were studying classical music. Pulling in Jacquie’s younger bro’ Stephen, The Balconies were born. In 2013, they toured most of the year all over the world……and 2014 looks to be a breakout for the band. Included is a video of the song “The Slo”.

Review – Rec Centre – Times A Billion

Vancouver’s Alex Hudson takes us on a flashback to the 1980’s with solid and likeable music with his experimental sound – dance-able songs, happy songs and sad songs. You should give it a listen and take it from there.

My Mother the Carjacker CD review

Indie pop Vancouver Series Vol LXXXI with the The Psychic Alliance plus special guests My Mother the Carjacker and Bricoda Friday Agust 2nd at the British Ex Servicemen Association 1143 Kingsway. https://www.facebook.com/events/562577393806658/ – See more at: http://www.vanmusic.ca/canadian-indie-bands/my-mother-the-carjacker-cd-review#sthash.nMzfrnGV.dpuf
Live, MMCJ is uncaged, rabid and wild releasing a spoiled whirlwind of energy. In their recording their music seems incomparable because it is so tame remaining technically sound and expressive. Being a slightly reserved album most MMCJ fans may write it off as not doing their live shows justice, but it is a great album. It is not common for an audience to be provided with different facets of the same songs and somehow this trio has managed to offer almost opposing executions of these songs.

Quit The City CD review

By Corina Pilay
When I was first introduced to Quit the City, possibly at the B-Ex (British Ex-Servicemen Association 1143 Kingsway), I was immediately engaged. These musicians were talented and intriguing. They were an even dose of melancholic intimacy, which is not an easy thing to pull off in live shows.

Their sound has been described as “a mix of psychedelic rock with hints of southern and grunge sounds.” In their self titled debut album, Quit The City, those elements complement each other fluidly, and when dressed up with catchy, soulful vocals and guitar riffs, some of their songs become infectious.

CD Review – The Zolas – Ancient Mars

After debuting with Tic Toc Tic in 2009, The Zolas climbed the precipice of cult status across Canada, thanks to a very loyal fan-base carried over from Zach Gray (vocals, guitar) and Tom Dobrzanski’s (piano) earlier years as Lotus Child.

CD Review.
By Oswaldo Perez Cabrera
We Need Surgery is not your typical band. They are based in Vancouver after being nomads for months. They were formed in Seoul, South Korea, of all places, in 2007. But they are not Koreans, well, actually one is, Jungkyu Lim (aka Johnny Q) one of the guitar players and local hero, two more are expats from the south (Alabama and California), one is from Ontario and only Valentino, one of the guitar players, is from BC. After reaching the acme (festivals, radio, magazines) of success in Asia …
