VIFF: World Premiere of Love Shines

24 September 2010 3 Comments

Ron Sexsmith is a prolific Canadian singer songwriter with twelve albums since 1995 with his debut  self-titled album on Interscope, followed by such eloquent musical gems as Other Songs (1997), Blue Boy (2001), Retriever (2004) and Time Being (2006).One of the consolidated Canadian artists around the world has been compared with Paul McCarney. Now the musician is presented in this documetary on the big screen by filmmaker Douglas Arrowsmith. The film is produced by Paperny Films and it will have its world premiere here in Vancouver. Love Shines follows Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith as he attempts to turn his niche following into mainstream success. Love Shines follows Sexsmith as he lays everything on the line to make a hit album. The curtain is pulled back for a rare glimpse inside the studio process as Sexsmith teams up with legendary producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe). But will this be enough? Sexsmith dreams of emerging with a song that achieves commercial radio play, but the journey with Rock also turns introspective.  Ron Sexsmith will be at the Friday, October 8 premiere screening and at the Saturday, October 9 matinee screening.

Through a series of flashbacks the songwriter confronts the meaning of success, weighing the lure of stardom against the humble beginnings that sparked the ‘birth’ of his songs. Punctuated by Super 8 footage chronicling the early years, an extraordinary playlist and a stellar cast featuring Elvis Costello, Steve Earle, Feist, Kiefer Sutherland and Daniel Lanois, Love Shines is a journey to the heart and soul of what songwriting is truly about.

The World Premiere of Love Shines will take place at the 2010 Vancouver International Film Festival. The film is a “Special Presentation” screening Friday, October 8 at 9:30 p.m. at the Empire Granville 7 Cinemas followed by a Saturday, October 9 matinee presentation at the Vancity Theatre.
