Kobo Town is returning to Vancouver February 4 to The Biltmore Cabaret.

Founded by Trinidadian/Canadian songwriter Drew Gonsalves, Kobo Town is named after the historic neighborhood in Port-of-Spain where calypso was born amid the boastful, humorous and militant chants of roaming stick-fighters. Situated near the fishermen’s wharf, the area was a site of constant defiance and conflict, a place where sticks and stones, songs and verses clashed with the bayonets and batons of colonial rule.

Spirit Unforgettable: Documentary about John Mann and the Spirit of the West

The Vancouver International Film Festival presented the documentary by Pete McCormack.
By Oswaldo Perez Cabrera.
Spirit Unforgettable won the award for Most Popular Canadian Documentary (based on audience balloting).
The film is as local as it can get. The documentary is dramatic and powerful and will leave a tear in your eye. The music is an auditory photograph for the people who were around in BC and Canada in general in the eighties and nineties and even at the beginning of the century. I am sure that some of you reading these lines are even in the documentary, or saw something in it as it happened in real life with your own eyes and in full colour. This documentary also hits hard to our community because the subject, John Mann, is a friend or a neighbour; a familiar figure for most of us, one of Vancouver greatest icons and a great guy.

Lori Cullen featuring Ron Sexsmith “OFF SOMEWHERE” Video Premiere.

After debuting at #1 on the U.S. iTunes Jazz Charts and quickly gaining radio play, Lori Cullen creating a name with her latest release, a collaboration with artist Kurt Swinghammer and songwriter Ron Sexsmith. “Off Somewhere” is the most romantic song on the album. Although I am never quite comfortable being in my own videos, I enjoy the representation of these two middle aged regular looking people (us) singing a love song to one another. The beautiful meoldy, the melancholy and the yearning of the lyrics are the star here” says Lori. “‘The rain has made the sidewalk shine’ is the line that sticks with me the most.”

Vancouver International Film Festival: We Are X a film by Stephen Kijak about X Japan.

By Oswaldo Perez Cabrera.
During the first 20 minutes of the film I kept wondering if X Japan was a real band or a cinematic, well written drama film. Soon we found out we were watching a rockumentary and X Japan are very much a real experience and not only that, they are one of the biggest bands in the world. Chances are, you might have heard about X Japan, after all they have over 30 million copies sold worldwide. This film tells their story. A story of loss, victories, glamour and a lot of rock and roll.

Drive-by Truckers brought their alternative country/southern rock style to Vancouver’s own Rickshaw Theatre

By Raechel Norrgard.
Yet another SOLD OUT show at The Rickshaw in Vancouver this Sunday! But where was the line-up out the front door? There wasn’t one because everyone arrived early to catch the opening act, Lydia Loveless. When we arrived to the show, the room was packed and the music hadn’t even started yet.

The Drive-by Truckers don’t introduce themselves; there’s no need to because the sound of the crowd cheering announces their arrival onstage. An array of eclectic guitars, Brad Morgan’s drum-kit of red, white and blue; and Jay Gonzalez’s piano with a poster stating BLACK LIVES MATTER taped to the side of it set the stage.
