My Mother the Carjacker CD review

By Corina Pilay.
Indie pop Vancouver Series Vol LXXXI with the The Psychic Alliance plus special guests My Mother the Carjacker and Bricoda Friday Agust 2nd at the British Ex Servicemen Association 1143 Kingsway. https://www.facebook.com/events/562577393806658/ – See more at: http://www.vanmusic.ca/canadian-indie-bands/my-mother-the-carjacker-cd-review#sthash.nMzfrnGV.dpuf
Live, MMCJ is uncaged, rabid and wild releasing a spoiled whirlwind of energy. In their recording their music seems incomparable because it is so tame remaining technically sound and expressive. Being a slightly reserved album most MMCJ fans may write it off as not doing their live shows justice, but it is a great album. It is not common for an audience to be provided with different facets of the same songs and somehow this trio has managed to offer almost opposing executions of these songs.

Arcane Saints from Australia

Still fresh from their Asian Spring tour, Australian band Arcane Saints is currently preparing their Never Say Die Canadian tour which will start on September 12th in Toronto at the Cherry Cola’s and finish at the British Ex Servicemen Association on September 22nd with Chilean band The Reaktion and The Twitch.

As a relative of Iron Maiden founding member Steve Harris, music was always in singer/guitarist Michael John’s blood. Although born in the UK, he grew up in New Zealand and began writing his own songs as a teenager.

After winning an international song writing competition Michael spent the prize money on a wild night of debauchery and a one way ticket to Melbourne, Australia. Shortly afterwards, he formed Arcane Saints.

Real Mad Decent

This four- piece band brings heavy kick drumbeats with intricate drum fills, smooth flowing rhymes, jagged, powerful, funky guitar riffs and thick bass lines to accompany their developing sound. The band adds a whole new element with their highly entertaining, energetic and tight live performances. With Real Mad Decent’s stage presence and McMillian’s explosive, Chris Cornell remnant vocals, Real Mad Decent will be sure to not disappoint you.

Review of This is THE SHOES and Devil in the Woodshack

By Corina Pilay
Our Indie Pop Vancouver Series Vol. XXIV on Friday, March 30 claimed a brand on my musical soul as the British Ex-Servicemen’s Association housed two remarkable Vancouver bands, Devil in the Wood Shack and this is THE SHOES. It is evident that they are capable of reviving Vancouver’s musical soul. In a city where the music scene is slowing fading out, financial hardship ails our lives and the spectacle prevails over integrity, it is a comfort to know that there are still great bands hidden in the cracks for us to discover.
