What’s art? How do we motivate ourselves to pursue this? It’s a question that I can’t answer, and most likely never will be able to answer fully. In a city brimming with talent and hardworking individuals, a few tend to stand out because they have even more courage and dedication than the rest, and they don’t let other people’s opinions or social constraints hold them back in the slightest.
One of these artist is singer/songwriter Brittney Grabill. She is a young up and coming musician hailing from Edmonton, Alberta. Her work is the result of what seems to me like an ingrained happiness and courage to fight past all odds. Her sound: An eclectic mix of pop, folk and soul with a bit of a country flair.

We are ContraSound. A little bit punk. A little bit Metal A hell of a lot Rock n’ Roll.
I experienced a disconnect from rock music a few years ago. Having listened to Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Motorhead, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Hendrix for years, I purged my music library in favor of electro house and dubstep. So, his decision to record an album of songs from the golden age of country music – many of which he’s been listening to for all his life – shouldn’t be all that surprising. Because when it all comes down – Rock, Blues, Folk, and Country – are only labels. And there was a time when those labels didn’t matter. Because if you know how to listen right, you’ll understand that there’s far less than a country mile separating Muddy Waters from Gene Autry. After all, Louis Armstrong and Jimmie Rodgers loved to sing together and you can bet they never once wondered if their collaborations confused their ‘target audience.’ And, as Jim loves to tell people, the blues great Johnny Shines put it all into perspective for him many years ago by saying that Robert Johnson was the best country singer he’d ever heard.

A three piece band from Vancouver, British Columbia playing a combination of Rock, Punk and Blues. This furious trio makes a lot of noise for a mere 3 people. Booth’s raging vocals and cantankerous guitar mixed with the punk-pounding pulses of Elwood on the skins and Kent’s gut punching bass, this band is pure sweat and rock and roll.

Mercy Years is a Vancouver band you will like.
Born out of Vancouver’s coffee scene, Mercy Years is a collaboration from parts of British Columbia, the Canadian Prairies and London, England. Euphoric melodies and driving rhythms reflect their expansive origins; hints of the UK post-punk scene are melded with Cascadian indie-rock textures resulting in a stirring wall of sound.
The initial spark was an answer to a Craigslist ad for musicians in autumn 2009. Then came a failed attempt at formation, leaving guitarists Nick Russell and Adam Sharp to assemble a collection …
