Edmonton’s The Hearts released Equal Love in Canada on October 30th to rave reviews, shows across Alberta, and a video for the single “Cold Connection”. Now the sextet is taking to the highways again this winter, with shows in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia in January.
Equal Love is a nine track collection of lavish, sonic splendor, exploring pop-folk, retro-rock, electronica and soul. It promises a welcome respite from the Canadian winter, being called “a warm toque of a new album” by Vice’s music site Noisey and “gorgeously layered, pensive and littered with so many musical references you could spend years tracking them down,” by the Edmonton Journal.

The best 25 Vancouver indie bands plus 1 (part 2)
Here is the second part of the best indie bands. Some of these bands will not make the next year’s list, not because they are not qualified but because they are too big now. We wanted to have a balance in this year’s list with some upcoming, emerging bands with more established artists. For the next Vancouver super stars we wanted to recognize their perseverance and celebrate the success they achieved. We are excited for 2013 and we …

SWS is one of this year’s Peak Performance TOP 20 Artists!
Since the 2007 inception of Vancouver based Sex with Strangers the band has been gaining local, national and international attention with a mention in Spin Magazine naming them one of “7 Undiscovered Bands Worth a Listen to” and now as a Top 20 Finalist in the 2011 Peak Performance Project. I sat down with the contest finalist (Hatch Benedict and Isabelle Dunlop) before their recent Peak showcase at the Red Room to talk about their third full-length album Frontier Justice, Isabelle’s fashion line (see their upcoming Fashion and Music for Memories event below!) and of course the Peak Performance Project Contest.

This party was a wild one. Its always nice when you get to see your friends showcase their talent in a gig. I knew the show was going to be mad when I saw Sex With Strangers sharing the bill with Joyce Collingwood and Run with the Heard. In addition Guilty about Girls was spinning pretty cool dancing tunes. All of the Vanmusic crew was there partying with a lot of familiar faces. The crowd was already fired up when Sex With Strangers took the stage, plus they had time to drink their booze.

The saga continues in the near future of the Pacific Northwest, THE NEW FRONTIER. Sex with Strangers explores love and war with their new production, now 7 years after the final explosion an inevitable clash between The Futurists and the New Pioneers is quickly approaching. No, It is not Asimov’s Sci-fi, it is a conceptual CD about a love story that takes place after our time. But it left me wondering where are the robots? Luring behind the walls of the losts cities? Or maybe, just maybe “The new pioneers” are not what they say they are or supposed to be. The answer might be inside the lyrics of the new SWS production.

Sex with Strangers were playing a free show on Thursday to celebrate the release of their new EP We Want the Fire and they threw also specials at the bar of the Metropole. It was raining outside but the place was full. The SWS played a 35 minute set with tracks from their upcoming album “Frontier Justice” and some of their previous hits like New City Anthem which is probably their most popular song. Step by step Hatch and the strangers have earned the love of plenty of vancouverites including those in the music scene.

We started the show with this band called a Problem of Alarming Dimensions, I was running on the cliffs of St John´s New Foundland with these songs in me headphones like 5 years ago. What a feeling, a perfect soundtrack for the wind and the gray landscape of the sky and the fierce waves pounding the cliffs, what a strange city, I love it. It was fresh but old, astounding and exciting. Small, cozy and crazy. Check the photo, it was taken day day. Anyways enjoy the songs.
