The Kush Cup

The Kush cup was a blast. The VanMusic boys were thrilled to be invited and be part of the jury that sampled different kinds of Sativas, Indicas, extracts and strains in between. We were at the Health Expo where dozens of exhibitors had their products and services in display, you could find everything from seed companies, to nutrients, to healthy food, juices, new technologies, dispensaries, etc. The weekend event also featured …

Budget rent a scam

The vehicle was returned in perfect condition except for a 1 centimetre chip on the windshield caused by a stone or rock. I had an estimate done by a professional windshield repairman called Too Nice Autoglass who saw the vehicle and said the regular charge for that repair was 50 dollars, Speedy and other companies charged between 50 and 80 dollars including labour

[29 Apr 2010 | Comments Off on Eyjafjallajokull | ]

Can you say Eyjafjallajokull? You better because now it has become part of history. The Icelandic volcano grounded thousands of airplanes and shut down airports across Europe. But I survived the volcanic eruption, eventhough I was in Manchester. One of the world´s capital of music, better known as Madchester, the cradle of sounds like Joy Division, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, Oasis, among others. The volcano spat ash and glass harmful for the planes, it can get inside and kill the engine plummeting the passangers to a certain death. …

Fate of the Mascots

Fate of the mascots.

What happened to the mascots of an important sporting event that took place in Vancouver during the month of February?
Sumi, the orca, went  to New Foundland for a holiday to spend some of its well deserved, hard earned money only to be blunderoged by a hunter that took him for a seal. Shame!
Quatchi, the sasquatch ended up in the Downtown Eastside shooting heroin after a date gone bad. He now lives in the streets and sleeps under a bridge close to Crab park. Pity!
The bear with wings …

FUSE party at the Vancouver Art Gallery

Other “attractions” of the night included: Get to know your neighbor by sending postcards to a stranger, free gifts by Natalie Puschwitz, performances by Hello, Blue Roses, and Kick Everything. Although these bands were not my cup of tea,Carol Sawyer and Ion Zoo definitely were. Kick Everything were a little too kitch and tried hard to be a no wave New York band, then there was the duo of Daniel Bejar from new Pornographers and Destroyer and his girlfriend Sydney Vermont and although I consider him a good songwriter we were parched and missed their performance. I didn´t think he needs our support but the bar downstairs neither, the DJ was lousy and the ambient a little dislocated so we went to the Gallery cafe where another jazzy band was playing. Much better.

[3 Nov 2009 | Comments Off on KINO: The seventh art and thewanna be gods and the underground KINO | ]

In Russian, cinema is called KINO and the venues kinoteatr. This country has a great history of directors and epic movies. I am no expert and I don´t want to research and write about all the Russian masters of cinema but your should consider exploring Russian cinema, from the Soviet times to the modern ones. For example, Serguei Einseistein, Andrey Tarkovski, Sergey Bondarchuk, Serguei Paradzhanov )who was Gerogian but super trippy, Jodorowski must have seen his films) and the new ones like Aleksandr Sokurov.
I haven´t explored much of films here …

Moscow´s underground and artistic movement is thriving. I did not expect less from a metropolis this size and with the amount of culture at their disposal.
However… It seems that people were shocked when they suddenly realized they could have all the comodities of the west (for a rice of course) and the majority of them (as always and everywhere in the world) went on to consume junk. I don´t know what is wrong with people? maybe it is because we are under the influence of some powerful drug or a …

A Night in the musuems

Museums in Moscow are one of the best things that happened to humanity. The variety is great so you can spend entire days looking at artwork. From early Egiptians to contemporary art, from the traditional and orthodox forms of art to the most bizarre and experimental. This is a city of a vast culture where you can breathe history. The choices are ample and to discover Russian art is a revelation, especially to enjoy the Futurists (Mikhail Larionov, Natalia Goncharova, and Kazimir Malevich inspired by poets like Mayakovski), and the …

The mayor of Moscow is a guy that goes by the name of Yury Luzhkov. He was first elected in 1996, reelected in 1999 and again in 2003. His name was heard before Vladimir Putin to become president but Boris Yeltsin crashed his presidential dreams.
A couple of days ago there was a gay demonstration that was banned by the mayor who has called this marches Satanic and degenerate. The OMON (Anti riot police) were there to beat up and arrest the defiant gays (All 30 of them). A couple of …

[3 Nov 2009 | Comments Off on Moscow´s cops: My brushes with Russian authorities | ]

Cops are visible everywhere. It seems like one third of the population is a police officer or a security guard. Militzia, as they are called here, go in old cars looking for the next victim. They can stop you and ask for your papers for no reason. It is their right, I guess it was inherited from the soviet era. So Russians must carry ID at all times, they have an internal passport that serves as their identification and must produce it when they are asked to. My brush with …
